Emirati free zones operator Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD Group) said on Monday that it has signed an agreement with a TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) unit to explore opportunities for the development of distributed solar solutions across KEZAD’s industrial ecosystem.

This ecosystem spans a total land area of 550 square kilometres (212.4 sq miles), including 100 square kilometres designated as free zones, and provides space for over 1,750 investors. The Abu Dhabi-based group said that it wants to be able to produce clean energy at its sites.

The agreement was signed with TotalEnergies Renewables Distributed Generation Middle East & Africa, which develops finances, builds and operates solar power systems for commercial and industrial (C&i) customers. In the UAE, the French firm has around 100 MW of business-to-business solar power, according to KEZAD Group.

Together, the two parties will combined their expertise and technologies conduct a series of feasibility studies for distributed solar generation at KEZAD, covering economic, commercial, regulatory, and technical aspects.

“Through our collaboration with TotalEnergies, we are keen to realise the complete potential of distributed solar generation across our integrated ecosystem at KEZAD Group, and to enhance the value proposition we can offer to our investors while supporting Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s sustainability goals,” said Mohamed Al Khadar Al Ahmed, CEO of Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi - KEZAD Group.

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has a goal to install 5.6 GW of solar PV capacity by 2026. It is currently developing a 2-GW solar plant in the Al Dhafra region.

KEZAD Group is a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi-based AD Ports Group.
