Iran’s energy ministry and the British Photovoltaic Association (BPVA) have signed a pact for the construction of a 1,000-MW solar power complex and a 500-MW panel factory in the Western Asian country.

According to BPVA chairman Reza Sheibani, the total cost of the solar power plant will be USD 1.6 billion (EUR 1.45bn), while the factory will require an investment of about USD 28 million. He said, as cited by local media, that the developers will seek financing from foreign investors for the project. The panel production facility will be a joint venture with local firms, he added.

The government is also holding talks with Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands in a drive to agree a transfer of their solar panel technology to Iran.
