UK battery storage developer Field on Monday announced that it is expanding into Spain, promising to roll out “hundreds of megawatts” of storage in the country by 2030.

The firm said it had set up an office in Barcelona, led by general manager Toni Martinez, who was appointed in 2023.

The move to Spain comes after the market there witnessed power prices dropping to zero or negative territory as renewables increased their generation output.

“[T]he frequent occurrence of negative prices in the Spanish electricity market indicates an excess of renewable generation and underscores the need for storage to balance supply and demand, helping manage intermittency and ensure grid stability,” said Martinez.

Spain also boasts tall decarbonisation targets, aiming for an 81% share of renewables in power generation by 2030. The country’s storage target, under the revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), is set at 22 GW.

Founded in 2021, Field says it has over 4.5 GWh of projects currently in advanced stages of development across Europe. Apart from the UK and Spain, the company also has an office in Italy, with Emanuele Taibi serving as the general manager.
