The new UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband on Wednesday chaired the first energy Mission Board, continuing his efforts to make Britain a clean energy superpower.

The new forum brings together ministers from across the government to ensure a focus on delivering the objective of clean power by 2030 and accelerating towards net zero.

“In an unstable world, the best way to boost our energy security and protect billpayers permanently is to speed up the transition away from fossil fuels and towards homegrown energy – making Britain a clean energy superpower,” said Ed Miliband.

The meeting came as the Energy Secretary announced a record budget of over GBP 1.5 billion (USD 1.9bn/EUR 1.8bn) for this year’s renewables auction and builds on other actions, including ending the onshore wind ban, greenlighting solar projects, launching Great British Energy’s partnership with The Crown Estate and setting up 2030 clean power Mission Control.

The new Onshore Wind Taskforce, chaired by the Energy Secretary and the CEO of EDF Renewables, Matthieu Hue, also met for the first time on Wednesday.

“By bringing industry and government together, the taskforce is focused on creating practical solutions to overcome barriers to accelerate our journey to achieving net zero,” said Matthieu Hue.
