The UK's Department for Transport (DfT) today announced GBP 8.8 million (USD 12.5m/EUR 10.1m) in funding for a project to expand hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and increase the number of hydrogen vehicles from the summer.

Behind the winning project is a consortium which includes ITM Power (LON:ITM), Shell, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai, and is managed by Element Energy.

UK hydrogen specialist ITM Power will get GBP 4.3 million of the funding to build four new hydrogen refuelling stations and to upgrade five to support more hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). In addition to the DfG grant, the project involves a GBP-13.1-million investment including support from the companies and other sources. It will back the procurement of almost 200 hydrogen cars, including by taxi firms and the police.

Hydrogen refuelling stations can produce the hydrogen on site using excess and renewable energy.
