UK and Qatar scientists have secured a GBP-400,000 (USD 492,000/EUR 467,000) grant from the UK government for a renewable energy research project.

The project involves researchers from the University of Newcastle and Qatar University, who will be working to better understand the combustion processes for biogases.

This is one of eight joint research projects, in different areas, across the six Gulf countries that will get a total of GBP 2.8 million in UK government funding, the British Embassy in Doha said today. Each of the two-year projects have been awarded up to GBP 400,000, following a call for applications by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the British Council in July 2016. This Institutional Links funding is a part of the UK government's GBP-9-million Gulf Science Innovation and Knowledge Economy Programme.

The biogas research project has identified opportunities in Qatar due to the presence of existing oil and gas companies, according to the announcement. It will combine gulf experimental expertise with UK supercomputer modelling.

Biogases derived from landfill, animal and human bio-waste processes could be used as a fuel for electricity generation and in transportation.
