Ukraine's Naftogaz to import LNG, green hydrogen from Canada

Ukrainian state-owned oil and gas company Naftogaz has agreed to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) and green liquid hydrogen from the Canadian province of Quebec under a pact with Symbio Infrastructure.

A newly-signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) calls for Symbio to make deliveries to an import terminal in a mutually agreed European transit country. The announcement did not disclose the volume that was agreed to be purchased.

Symbio says it will supply “the world's lowest carbon LNG”, which it produces at facilities that run on hydropower. The company’s subsidiary GNL Quebec is currently developing the Energie Saguenay carbon-neutral LNG export facility in Quebec. According to Symbio, its projects should start operations in 2027.

"This agreement is an important milestone on Ukraine's path of transitioning to diverse supplies of energy from around the globe, which we began at the end of 2014, when we stopped the direct import of Russian natural gas," said Yuriy Vitrenko, CEO of Naftogaz Ukraine.

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, transmission system operator Ukrenergo also disconnected the local power system from the networks of Russia and Belarus on February 24 and in mid-March Ukraine completed an emergency synchronisation of its grid with the Continental European network.
