UK alternative energy firm PowerHouse Energy (LON:PHE) has signed a pact with Qatar-based energy consultant Energy & Environment Holding (EEH) to jointly build waste-to-hydrogen facilities in Qatar.

Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU), the parties intend to form a joint venture, which will be licensed to deploy PowerHouse’s distributed modular gasification (DMG) technology in Qatar, the UK firm said on Wednesday. EEH will own 51% in the new company.

The goal of the partnership will be the installation of several hydrogen refuelling stations for use by fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) in Qatar. An early study shows that some 20 DMG systems in Doha and surrounding areas would produce enough hydrogen to supply several thousand cars and buses leading up to, and in support of, the 2022 FIFA World cup.

As part of the plan, EEH will take care of land acquisition, securing permits, licenses and approvals from local regulators and supplying waste. In addition, it will be in charge of securing third-party financing for the scheme.

PowerHouse noted that the MOU is not a fully binding agreement and it might not lead to signing a firm contract.

The project was conceived and is being coordinated by London-based Waste2tricity Ltd in collaboration with PowerHouse.
