Consumer goods giant Unilever Plc (LON:ULVR) on Friday announced a target to become "carbon positive" by 2030.

The maker of brands such as Dove, Lipton, Knorr and Omo said it would source 100% of the energy across its operations from renewables by 2030. Together with partners it will also directly support the generation of more renewable energy than it consumes, making the surplus available to the markets and communities in which it operates.

Under the "carbon positive" target, the company will get all of its electricity purchased from the grid from renewable sources and eliminate coal from its energy mix by 2020.

Unilever is stepping up its climate initiatives as global leaders are gathering for the UN climate change conference (COP21) in Paris. The group joined calls for ambitious action at the summit which starts Monday.
