Vistra agrees USD 3.25bn buyout of zero-carbon energy unit
Sep 19, 2024 11:01 CESTUnited Airlines Inc, together with United Airlines Ventures (UAV), on Wednesday announced an investment in Ithaca, New York-based carbon dioxide (CO2) utilisation company Dimensional Energy as part of efforts towards reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
Dimensional Energy's technology uses the Fischer-Tropsch process, well known in the production of fuels from coal or methane, to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from carbon dioxide and water.
In parallel, United has committed to buying at least 300 million gallons (1.14 billion litres) of SAF from Dimensional over 20 years.
Established in 2016, Dimensional is set to start operations at a carbon dioxide-to-fuels demo in Tucson, Arizona next month. While this site will use grid electricity, the technology can run on any kind of renewable energy and future facilities are slated to use hydropower, wind and concentrated solar power. The company can also utilise various sources of carbon dioxide such as industrial sites, direct air capture, or fermentation and biomass gasification.
