The University of Sydney will use 100% renewable electricity after signing a deal with Australian power producer and retailer Snowy Hydro Ltd.

The university said on Thursday it has signed a five-year agreement with Snowy Hydro’s subsidiary Red Energy that will see it procure electricity from renewable power plants in New South Wales. The arrangement will become effective from July 1, 2022.

According to the deal, the university’s electricity consumption will be matched with output from Red Energy and Snowy Hydro’s solar and other renewable generation assets, with associated renewable energy certificates to be surrendered by Red Energy.

The contract will secure the power needs of the University of Sydney’s campuses and student accommodation. It will support its progress towards a target of reaching zero net emissions by 2030.

“Combining our contracted wind and solar energy with our on-demand hydro assets allows us to provide reliable and 100 percent renewable electricity to the University,” said Paul Broad, Managing Director and CEO of Snowy Hydro.
