Romania's energy output edged up by an annual 0.7% in 2014, while imports increased 6.1%, the statistics office, INS, said on Wednesday.

Romania's energy production totalled 21.9 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) last year, while imports reached 10.25 million TOE, INS said in a statement.

A TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.

Romania's 2014 energy output and imports, breakdown by type of resource (in thousands of TOE, y/y pct change in brackets):

Domestic output Imports
Total 21,922.4 (+0.7) 10,251.0 (+6.1)
- coal 4,445.3 (-5.7) 500.5 (-15.6)
- oil 3,788.3 (-2.0) 6,727.4 (+27)
- natural gas 8,675.1 (+0.9) 447.4 (-61.5)
- hydro, wind, solar and nuclear power 5,013.7 (+9.2) 60.3 (+55.8)
- imported oil products - 2,051.5 (-3.0)

Romania's electricity output and imports totalled 64 billion KWh in 2014, up 7.8% on the year.

The Romanian thermal power plants' production fell by 1.6% to some 26.6 billion KWh last year. The hydroelectric power stations' output jumped 25.4% to 19 billion KWh. The production of the country's sole nuclear power plant edged up 0.5% to some 11.7 billion KWh and the output of wind farms was 4.7 billion KWh, up by 34.4 million KWh from a year earlier. Solar plants produced 1.3 billion KWh, up by 875 million KWh compared to 2013.

Final electricity consumption fell by an annual 1.9% to 49.25 billion KWh.

Romania’s electricity exports rose by 5.7 billion KWh to 8.2 billion KWh in the period under review, INS said.
