Romania's energy output rose by an annual 4.7% in January, while imports fell 11.2%, the statistics office, INS, said on Wednesday.

Romania's energy production totalled 1.94 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) in January, while imports reached 0.78 million TOE, INS said in a statement.

A TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.

Romania's electricity output and imports totalled 6.03 billion KWh in January, up 2.1% on the year.

The Romanian thermal power plants' production fell by 13.7% to some 2.69 billion KWh in January The hydroelectric power stations' output jumped 35.6% to 1.6 billion KWh. The production of the country's sole nuclear power plant edged down 0.5% to some 1.05 billion KWh and the output of wind farms was 0.48 billion KWh, down by 6.4 million KWh from a year earlier. Solar plants produced 53.5 million KWh, up by 42.4 million KWh compared to the same period of 2014.

Final electricity consumption fell by an annual 6.8% to 4.25 billion KWh.

Romania’s electricity exports rose by 422 million KWh to 982 million KWh in the period under review, INS said.
