Romania's energy output rose by an annual 4.9% in the first quarter of the year, while imports increased by 4.5%, the statistics office, INS, said on Tuesday.

Romania's energy production totalled 5.71 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) through March and imports rose to 2.58 million TOE, INS said in a statement.

A TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.

Romania's first-quarter energy output and imports, breakdown by type of resource (in thousands of TOE, y/y pct change in brackets):

Domestic output Imports
Total 5,713.2 (+4.9) 2,581.6 (+4.5)
- coal 1,237.9 (+10.7) 144.7 (+49.2)
- oil 936.7 (-1.4) 1,790.0 (+16.1)
- natural gas 2,203.0 (+0.8) 65.8 (-76.4)
- hydro, wind, solar and nuclear power 1,335.6 (+11.8) 17.3 (+90.1)
- imported oil products - 441.5 (+2.2)

Romania's electricity output and imports totalled 17.2 billion KWh in the first quarter, up 5.1% on the year.

The Romanian thermal power plants' production fell by 12.6% to some 7 billion KWh through March. The hydroelectric power stations' output jumped 35.5% to 4.9 billion KWh. The production of the country's sole nuclear power plant fell 1.8% to some 3 billion KWh and the output of wind farms was 1.8 billion KWh, up by 408.3 million KWh from a year earlier. Solar plants produced 264.2 million KWh, up by 100.7 million KWh compared to the same period of 2014.

Final electricity consumption fell by an annual 3.6% to 12.5 billion KWh.

Romania’s electricity exports rose by 94.7% to 2.6 billion KWh in the period under review, INS said.
