British businessman Richard Branson is buying clean energy company BMR Energy LLC, it was announced as the latter cut the ribbon on its 36-MW wind farm in Jamaica.

The announcement that Branson’s Virgin Group is in the process of acquiring the US-based company was made at the opening of the wind farm on Thursday, local media reported.

The billionaire entrepreneur was cited as saying at the ceremony that he wanted to speed up the green energy revolution and push governments across the Caribbean and elsewhere towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

BMR Energy is a company set up in 2013 to invest in clean energy projects in the Caribbean and Latin America. Its newly inaugurated 11-turbine wind park in Jamaica is expected to generate some 120 GWh of electricity per year, enough to meet roughly 3% of the country’s current energy demand (http://renewables.seenews.com/news/bmr-cuts-ribbon-on-36-mw-jamaican-wind-farm-536110).
