UPM Raflatac buys 100% renewable power for factory in N Carolina

UPM Raflatac Inc, a US maker of pressure sensitive label materials, said last week its factory in Mills River in the US state of North Carolina is now running on 100% renewable power.

The Mills River factory has chosen North Carolina-based Duke Energy Corp (NYSE:DUK) as its electricity supplier. It will receive the supply under the power company’s NC Renewable Energy Program and, in its words, become the first manufacturing facility in North Carolina to run exclusively on renewables.

The label maker, which operates as a unit of Finnish paper mill and timber company UPM-Kymmene Oyj (HEL:UPM), has a target to reduce fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its operations and power purchases by 30% by 2030. Before switching to 100% renewables, the Mills River factory had only 4% of renewable electricity in its supply, the company said.
