UPS (NYSE:UPS) will invest an estimated USD 18 million (EUR 16.9m) in on-site solar at its facilities, adding almost 10 MW to its owned solar power capacity.

The US logistics company, which has more than 2,580 facilities around the world, this week said it plans to "significantly escalate" its investment in solar. "We have a significant number of facilities that are well positioned to deploy solar at scale and increase our sustainable energy options for our buildings and electric vehicles," commented Bill Moir, director of facilities procurement at UPS.

As a start, the company plans to install solar at at least eight of its facilities in the US. The systems, expected to be completed by the end of the year, will increase its solar capacity almost five-fold. UPS will buy more than 26,000 solar panels for the installations. It will own and operate the arrays and also plans to play a leading role in their design and implementation.

The company said it expects to add more solar over the next several years as it identifies suitable opportunities.
