Uruguay's solar programme is chance for German PV firms - report

May 31, 2013 - The solar programme of Uruguay, issued on May 2, presents a good chance for German photovoltaic (PV) firms, sector news platform photovoltaik.eu reported yesterday citing the head of the German-Uruguayan Commerce Chamber Tobias Winter as saying.

Uruguay's president Jose Mujica obliged state-owned electricity supplier Administracion Nacional de Usinas y Trasmisiones Electricas (UTE) at the start of May 2013 to launch a public tender for up to 206 MW of PV capacity. UTE published the tender in the middle of May.

Winter said that companies can bid for on-ground facilities ranging from 500 KW to 50 MW in output. He added the remuneration of the companies is secured via 20-year contracts with UTE and that both national and international bidders are welcome as long as a fifth of the invested sum comes from Uruguay itself.

The Commercial Chamber head added that there are good German-Uruguayan relations, which could help the business. Moreover, development banks are ready to grant credits for such projects.

Winter said that the German-Uruguayan Commerce Chamber organises a workshop on the matter in Stuttgart on June 24, where it will present the details about the government tender.
