US agency awards technical support grant to 100-MW solar project in Ghana

The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) last week provided a USD-704,815 (EUR 628,917) technical assistance grant to a Ghanaian solar developer to help bring a 100-MW solar project in the African country to financial close.

The grant recipient, Home Energy Africa Ltd, has picked GreenMax Capital Advisors of the US to perform the technical assistance that will involve preparation for power purchase agreement (PPA) talks, services contracts and financing arrangements.

USTDA said the move supported the goals of the US government's Power Africa initiative to increase electricity access across sub-Saharan Africa.

The project, that will be located in the village of Nyimbale-Sankana, will provide electricity to at least 80,000 average homes in Ghana, Home Energy Africa's president and chief executive, Charles Sena Ayenu, said in the statement. It will help the Ghanaian government achieve its objective of 5,000 MW of installed generation capacity, including 10% from renewables.
