The US Department of Energy (DoE) on Monday announced up to USD 450 million (EUR 410m) to back residential rooftop solar and battery storage installations in Puerto Rico.

The funding is expected to support the deployment of up to 30,000-40,000 solar and battery systems for very low-income single-family households.

Applications can be made until September 18 by private industry, non-profit organisations, energy cooperatives, educational institutions or state and local governmental entities. The funding will also be used to provide residents getting solar and storage installations with system education and consumer protection support.

The announcement represents the first round of funding from the USD-1-billion Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund, which was officially launched in February and is aimed at bringing investments in renewable and resilient energy infrastructure in Puerto Rico.

In addition, DoE announced the Solar Ambassador Prize, whereby it will award USD 3.5 million to up to 20 community organisations in Puerto Rico to perform outreach and engagement to qualifying households.
