US embassy in Malta goes solar with USD 2.1m investment

US Embassy in Malta on Monday held a groundbreaking ceremony for a green energy projects featuring 350 kW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, a small wind turbine and a solar pool heater.

According to a report by Times of Malta, the total investment stands at USD 2.1 million (EUR 1.8m). The Department of State contracted local company Solar Solutions Ltd for the project, which is scheduled to be completed by March 2016, says a press release.

The solar systems will be installed on the embassy grounds and on top of new parking lot canopies. Together, the green energy systems will be able to generate about 505,000 kWh per year and are expected to save USD 89,000 annually.

Malta's environment minister Leo Brincat also announced at the groundbreaking event that the government will start a preparatory phase for a new Low Carbon Development Strategy.
