US Energy Earthshots to get USD 200m in funding

The US Department of Energy (DoE) last week announced a programme that will provide USD 200 million (EUR 184m) in funding for Energy Earthshot Research Centres (EERCs).

The Energy Earthshots seek to drive breakthroughs in emerging clean energy technologies needed to help solve the climate crisis. The following six Energy Earthshots have been announced so far: Hydrogen Shot, Long Duration Storage Shot, Carbon Negative Shot, Enhanced Geothermal Shot, Floating Offshore Wind Shot and Industrial Heat Shot. The Hydrogen Shot, for instance, was the first Energy Earthshot announced in June 2021. It pursues a target of USD 1 per 1 kg of clean hydrogen in one decade.

The new programme is expected to bring together multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary teams to tackle key research challenges for the six Energy Earthshots. The DoE national laboratories can apply for funding and are encouraged to partner with other institutions or the industry.

The funding, coming from the Office of Science, will be awarded over four years, with awards expected to be worth between USD 3 million and USD 5 million per year.
