US Petra Systems completes 5-MW smart solar project in Bahrain

(SeeNews) – Jun 25, 2014 – US Petra Solar, a fully owned unit of renewable energy company Petra Systems, said today that it had inaugurated a 5-MW highly distributed grid-smart solar installation in Bahrain.

The order was placed by Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA). For the deployment Petra partnered with US-based Caspian Renewable Energy, which is particularly focused on distributed smart solar.

The project spreads over rooftops, car park shades and utility poles. It will use Petra Solar’s advanced SunWave Microinverter smart solar technology. The small distance between the smart grid and the households will make it more reliable for consumers and power will be produced only where needed.

The Bapco installation is expected to have an annual output of more than 8,000 MWh. This will offset 6,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

The landmark facility in the municipality of Awali, central Bahrain, is the first phase of the Let Bahrain Shine initiative of Petra Solar, Bapco, NOGA, the University of Bahrain and the government. It aims to integrate smart energy technologies in the community. Petra Solar and Caspian will therefore continue to partner with the Bahraini investors.
