USDA backs renewables in Mississippi Delta

Sep 27, 2013 - The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Thursday said it will extend over USD 3 million (EUR 2.2m) in financing for renewable energy projects, public health improvement and small farmers in the Mississippi Delta region,

On a visit in Jackson, Mississippi, agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack explained that the funding will improve the rural economy in the region. It will be extended through USDA's Small Socially Disadvantaged Producer (SSDP) Grant programme, the Rural Energy for America Programme (REAP) and the Delta Health Care Services Grant Programme.

USDA will allocate part of the funds for seven rural renewable energy projects, aimed at cutting consumption and promoting the use of green energy. It will also spend USD 1 million for five projects projects that will offer technical aid to farmers and enhance their businesses and over USD 1.8 million for three healthcare projects.

Some of the recipients that will receive renewables financing are Synergetics DCS Inc, Synergetics Properties Inc and David Palmer LLC. They will get grants of USD 230,100, USD 125,000 and USD 40,600, respectively, for the construction of solar plants.
