UTC Power to supply 2.4 MW of fuel cells to CBS Studios

Jul 2, 2012 - UTC Power, a unit of US United Technologies Corp (NYSE:UTX), said Monday it would supply 2.4 MW of fuel cell systems to CBS Studios for installation at two locations in California.

Three PureCell stationary fuel cell units will be deployed at CBS Studio Center in Studio City and a further three -- at CBS Television City in Los Angeles. The systems are expected to meet 40% and 60% of the facilities' electricity needs, respectively. In addition, both studios will use the thermal energy from the fuel sells for cooling, while Television City will also use it for space heating and domestic hot water.

UTC Power further said that four of the fuel cell systems would be able to operate independently of the grid, providing energy security during blackouts, natural disasters and other emergencies.

The PureCell units will offset more than 2,370 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, UTC Power calculates. They will also cut nitrogen oxide emissions and will allow CBS to save over 2.8 million gallons (10.6m litres) of water per year. UTC Power is to deliver the systems later in 2012.

The project has secured funds from California's Self-Generation Incentive Programme.
