Utilitas marks Tallinn's European Green Capital title with new solar

Estonian renewable power and heat producer Utilitas said on Tuesday that it has launched construction of a 9.3-MW solar farm in Estonia’s capital Tallinn.

The city of Tallinn is the European Green Capital for 2023, a title bestowed by the European Commission each year to cities to recognise their environmental achievements and sustainability. Utilitas said that because it made the investment decision on the project in 2023, it decided to symbolically name its initiative the European Green Capital Solar Park. According to the company, the European Green Capital Solar Park will be the largest such plant in Tallinn.

Utilitas is investing EUR 8 million (USD 8.8m) in the project. The solar farm will consist of 15,600 bifacial modules mounted on single-axis trackers. The facility will occupy an area of 11 hectares (27.2 acres) at a site that was once the Vao limestone quarry.

The company has just started preparatory construction works at the site and expects the project to be finalised in April 2024.

The European Green Capital Solar Park will complement the company's Vao energy complex, which is made up of two combined heat and power plants and one smaller solar farm. Utilitas said that the complex will be expanded next year to include green hydrogen production and a refuelling station and heat storage.
