Dutch marine contractor Van Oord will transport and install the monopile foundations for the 1.5-GW Baltica 2 offshore wind project in Poland.

As the successful bidder, the company has been contracted by the project’s developers, Polish utility PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA (WSE:PGE) and Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED), the parties announced today.

Van Oord will transport and install 111 extended monopiles, a type of foundations that combine a monopile and a transition piece, including four for the offshore substations.

“We consistently conclude further contracts with global companies from the offshore industry for the installation of all components for the Baltica 2 project. We have already chartered vessels for the installation of turbines and cables, and now also a fleet that will install the foundations that commence the construction of the offshore wind farm,” explained Arkadiusz Sekscinski, president of the management board at PGE Baltica. Installation of the monopiles is due to start in 2026, with Baltica 2 expected to generate first power a year later. Baltica 2 and the 1-GW Baltica 3 project, slated for delivery by 2030, will form the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm.

Van Oord will use offshore installation vessel Aeolus and heavy-lift installation vessel Svanen for the project. The latter vessel will be upgraded this year to become capable of installing the foundations for the 14-MW wind turbines used at Baltica 2. Van Oord’s flexible fallpipe vessel Nordnes will be deployed to install rock at the foundation locations.
