Swedish utility Vattenfall AB and its Dutch partners, passenger trains operator NS and railway infrastructure manager ProRail, on Wednesday opened a 13.2-MW wind farm at a site near the Amsterdam Sloterdijk railway station.

The Nieuwe Hemweg wind farm is a result of a joint effort to replace 12 old turbines with six new machines, which almost double the previously installed capacity, Vattenfall said.

Vattenfall pulled out eight old turbines from the NS site next to a train yard where Nieuwe Hemweg’s six are now, and another four turbines from a location near the city of Medemblik. The province of North Holland has a policy dictating that one new turbine should replace two old ones, the utility explained.

The construction process was described as challenging, since the soil on the site is sparse, the land intensively used and the train yard had already been reserved for ProRail. The turbine installation work started last autumn, and was aided by mild winter weather.

After extensive testing, the wind farm was commissioned and now generates electricity for Vattenfall, the Swedish company said.
