Singapore-based renewables company Vena Energy on Monday announced the signing of a framework agreement to study opportunities for the creation of local production lines in Indonesia for components of solar photovoltaic panels and energy storage systems.

The company inked the agreement in Jakarta with Chinese photovoltaic (PV) panel manufacturer Suntech, US-based energy storage provider Powin and battery cell producer REPT Battero, part of China’s Tsingshan Group.

The contemplated components production will support a hybrid megaproject that Vena Energy is developing in the Riau Islands. The project is expected to combine up to 2 GW of solar power capacity with over 8 GWh of battery energy storage.

Vena Energy simultaneously signed a collaboration agreement with Shell Eastern Trading Pte Ltd for the supply of power from this big hybrid project to Singapore.

Vena Energy has so far commissioned five solar and onshore wind projects totalling 114 MW in Indonesia.

“With this Framework Agreement, we aim to significantly contribute to the development of a productive domestic supply chain in the renewable energy sector, which will support Indonesia’s energy transition plan and enhance the local economy by creating jobs, fostering industrial expansion and opening export opportunities in this growing sector of the economy,” said the company’s chief executive Nitin Apte.
