Verizon contracts 640 MW of renewables from Leeward

US wireless carrier Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) has agreed to purchase the electricity produced by up to 640 MW of renewable energy plants under newly signed contracts with Leeward Renewable Energy LLC.

Leeward, a portfolio company of OMERS Infrastructure, announced today that it signed 15-year renewable energy purchase agreements (REPAs) with Verizon tied to two wind and two solar projects currently under development. These are the Blackford County Wind, Horizon Solar and White Wing Ranch Solar projects, as well as an undisclosed wind scheme of 80 MW.

Each scheme will rely on locally-made wind turbines and thin-film solar panels. More specifically, the modules will be supplied by First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR).

With these contracts, Verizon seeks to achieve its objective to be net zero in its operational emissions by 2035. The carrier and Leeward have existing contracts for the 196-MW Big Plain and the 100-MW Oak Trail solar projects.
