Vistra agrees USD 3.25bn buyout of zero-carbon energy unit
Sep 19, 2024 11:01 CESTDenmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) was back on top as the number one wind turbine supplier in 2021, the year that saw global wind power installations approach 100 GW for the second year in a row, research company BloombergNEF (BNEF) said in its latest report on the sector.
The wind industry installed 99.2 GW of turbines around the world in 2021, compared to 98.5 GW commissioned a year earlier, according to BNEF’s summary of its 2021 Global Wind Turbine Market Shares report. As much as 83% of the total wind power capacity was installed on land, but 16.8 GW of new offshore wind represented a 161% surge compared to 2020 installations, BNEF said.
Vestas was behind 15.2 GW of installed turbines, both onshore and offshore, coming back to the top of the supplier ranking in 2021 after spending one year in the third place. China’s Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Co Ltd (HKG:2208) remained in the second place, and was followed by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) as the third ranking.
The 2020 leader GE Renewable Energy dropped to the fifth place after its installations in the US market declined by 22%.
BNEF's list of top 10 wind turbine manufacturers in 2021 is presented in the table below:
Manufacturer: | Installed capacity (onshore + offshore): |
Vestas | 15.20 GW |
Goldwind | 12.04 GW |
Siemens Gamesa | 8.64 GW |
Envision | 8.46 GW |
GE | 8.30 GW |
Windey | 7.71 GW |
Mingyang | 7.53 GW |
Nordex | 6.80 GW |
Shanghai Electric | 5.34 GW |
Dongfang Electric | 3.37 GW |
China and the US were the largest and the second largest markets, respectively, for new wind build. Together, they accounted for two-thirds of new global wind power capacity in 2021. With 3.6 GW of new onshore and near-shore wind farms coming online last year, Vietnam secured its place on the list of the top three global wind markets for the first time, BNEF said.
