Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has signed a conditional agreement with Vattenfall AB and BASF SE (ETR:BAS) to supply the turbines for their Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind projects with an overall capacity of around 1.6 GW in the German North Sea.

The Danish wind turbine manufacturer is set to supply 112 V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbines for the projects, 68 units for Nordlicht 1 and 44 for Nordlicht 2. The contract also includes a five-year service and warranty agreement and a 30-year operational support agreement.

Vestas disclosed the conditional agreement last week without providing further details at that time.

Construction of the Nordlicht projects is expected to start in 2026, with the Nordlicht 1 turbines to be installed in 2027 and the Nordlicht 2 turbines in 2028. The wind farms are slated to be fully operational in 2028.

BASF highlighted that Vestas’ 15-MW turbine is currently the most powerful offshore turbine available on market. The Cherman chemicals group acquired a 49% stake in the 1.6-GW Nordlicht offshore wind complex earlier this year.

To boost sustainability, the top sections of half of the towers will be made with low-emission steel, resulting in a 16% reduction in the towers’ overall carbon footprint. The low-emission steel is produced from steel scrap melted in an electric arc furnace powered by wind energy.
