Vestas, Siemens Gamesa partner to standardise tower transport equipment

Wind turbine manufacturing rivals Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy have entered into a partnership agreement aimed at increasing standardisation in the wind industry, according to an announcement this week.

The deal, building on collaboration on tower feet and lifting guidelines, is facilitated by Energy Cluster Denmark.

Under the new agreement, the companies will start with work towards standardising tower transportation equipment for offshore wind. They explained that the process of shipping a wind turbine tower for offshore installation is costly as each time the manufacturer welds a box onto the installation vessel to secure the tower. All the equipment is removed after completion of the offshore installation, adding further costs.

"In 2027, there will be far too many offshore wind farm projects on the drawing board relative to the number of installation vessels available,” said Jesper Moller, chief engineer, offshore execution at Siemens Gamesa. He added that the new partnership with Vestas seeks to optimise the cost-intensive equipment each of the companies delivers today.

“Standardisation will allow us quite simply to ship out more turbine parts faster," Moller commented.
