Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has been selected as the preferred supplier, EPC contractor for a 600-MW wind project in Laos.

A memorandum of understanding between Vestas and project developer Impact Electrons Siam Co Ltd (IES) will be signed next month at a ceremony in Bangkok, The Nation reported. The project in southern Laos is calling for an investment of USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.35bn), it was announced previously.

An agreement for the project was signed between the Lao government and Thai developer in August 2015. The wind turbines will be installed in Dak Cheung and Sanxay districts of Sekong and Attapeu provinces. Nearly all of the park’s output is to be sold to Thailand and buyers bordering the Mekong.

Early development of the project started back in 2012 when Impact Energy Asia, an IES unit, signed an exclusive development memorandum of understanding with the Lao Government. The company has since completed wind measurement, feasibility study and environment impact assessments.
