Vestas to deliver turbines for 105 MW wind projects in South Africa

Aug 1, 2013 - Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) said today it will deliver wind turbines for three wind projects with an overall capacity of 105 MW in South Africa.

The order was placed by a consortium led by Innowind, a 80% subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF EN), the renewable energy unit of French utility EDF (EPA:EDF).

The three wind farms -- Chaba with a capacity of 21 MW, Waainek with a capacity of 24 MW and Grassridge with a capacity of 60 MW -- will be located in the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. The three wind power plants are expected to produce more than 375 GWh of clean electricity per year, enough to cover the needs of some 240,000 households, the Danish company estimated.

Deliveries of the wind turbines are scheduled to start in the middle of 2014, while commissioning is expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2014.

The order also includes a 10-year services agreement, Vestas said.

South Africa aims at 1.8 GW of wind energy capacity by 2025.
