VMC building 40-MW cogeneration biomass plant in Philippines

Philippines-based sugar producer Victorias Milling Co Inc (VMC) has started building a 40-MW cogeneration biomass power plant in Negros Occidental province.

In a clarification statement related to a news article posted by the Business Mirror, the company said it plans to have the facility completed within the next crop year, which starts in September.

The report quotes VMC president and COO, Eduardo Concepcion, as saying that the firm will export about 25 MW to the grid and will use the rest for its own operations. According to the news article, Concepcion has also said that VMC plans a Phase II plant of the same capacity that will export just 20 MW. The company clarified in its statement that this is part of the long-term vision of the corporation.

At the same time, VMC denied having signed a deal with Wuxi Huaguang Electric Power Engineering with regard to the supply of a boiler for the project.

VMC also confirmed it plans to invest between PHP 50 million (USD 1m/EUR 940,000) and PHP 80 million to install a dehydrator at its distillery for the production of 50,000 litres of bioethanol per day.
