Renewable power producer Voltalia SA (EPA:VLTSA) on Wednesday unveiled a plan to build a 2.9-MW run-of-river hydropower plant (HPP) in French Guiana.

The French Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) authorised Voltalia to ink a deal with EDF SEI regarding the sale of electricity produced by the new hydro project.

Under the terms of the agreement, the power from the plant will be supplied to EDF SEI for a period of 30 years starting from the HPP commissioning which is planned for 2026.

Located on the Inini River at Saut-Sonnelle, in the municipality of Maripa-Soula, the power plant is expected to generate 12.7 GWh of electricity per year, enough to meet the power demands of around 11,000 local inhabitants.

In addition to supplying clean electricity to the population and creating local jobs, the run-of-river project will also cut the import and consumption of 6 million litres of diesel fuel per year, Voltalia noted.
