Voltalia to power telecom towers in Myanmar

French renewable power plants operator Voltalia SA (EPA:VLTSA) has won a contract to ensure power supply to 171 telecom towers in Myanmar as an energy service company (ESCO).

CEO Sebastien Clerc said telecom towers represent a fast-growing niche within the decentralised energy market and the company sees many opportunities in that field.

MNTI, which owns a network of telecom towers used by telecom operator MyTel, has selected Voltalia to provide power for a period of 10 years to 171 telecom towers in the regions of Bago and Ayeyarwaddy. Of these, about 80% are off the grid. Initially, in order to be able to ensure supply from this month, the sites will rely on thermal generators and battery storage. Voltalia said that solar photovoltaic (PV) panels will be installed gradually to replace diesel capacity.

Voltalia and MNTI have plans to expand their cooperation to boost coverage.
