Renewable power plants operator Voltalia SA (EPA:VLTSA) has been awarded a project to build a 130-MW solar park in Tunisia and run it under a contract with the country’s power grid operator.

The photovoltaic (PV) farm will be installed near the city of Gafsa, in southwestern Tunisia. Paris-based Voltalia said on Wednesday that construction works are planned to commence in 2025 and commercial operations will be launched in the following year.

The solar park will have an annual output that will be equal to the electricity consumption of more than 700,000 inhabitants. Revenues will come from a 30-year power sales contract with Societe Tunisienne de l'Electricite et du Gaz, or STEG, the operator of the Tunisian public grid.

“Thanks to attractive climate conditions, supportive governmental policies and strong support from international financial institutions, Tunisia has a great renewable energy potential in the short and long term,” said Sebastien Clerc, Voltalia’s CEO.

Tunisia aims to lift the share of renewables in its power generation mix to 30% by 2030 from 2.2% last year.
