Irish state-owned energy company ESB has picked French renewable power plants operator Voltalia SA (EPA:VLTSA) as the building contractor for a 57-MW solar farm project in County Longford.

The Paris-based company will serve as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the multi-million euro Middleton House project, ESB said. Financial details about the value of the award and proposed overall project investment were not available in the press statement.

The photovoltaic (PV) farm will be installed northeast of Lanesborough, in the midlands of Ireland, and will connect via a new 5-km cable route along a disused peat rail line, along with existing infrastructure at the site. Once in operation, it will be able to generate enough electricity to meet the electricity consumption of over 15,000 homes, equal to the demand of almost all homes in County Longford.

Voltalia is set to begin construction works in September.

The Middleton House project was among the winners in Ireland’s second Renewable Electricity Support Scheme 2 (RESS 2) auction in the summer of 2022.
