Vopak, Hydrogenious LOHC to set up JV for hydrogen logistics

Dutch tank storage company Royal Vopak and Germany’s Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies are setting up a joint venture (JV) for storing, transporting and supplying hydrogen using Hydrogenious’ Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology.

The JV will be equally owned by the partners, called LOHC Logistix GmbH and located in Germany. It will help both companies’ efforts to supply green hydrogen to off-takers via ship, train or tanker. Its incorporation is subject to customary closing conditions.

"Worldwide there exists a huge capacity of storage tanks, sea vessels, inland tankers and tank trucks for the storage and transportation of liquid fossil fuels. Hydrogenious wants to turn all this valuable infrastructure into the hydrogen infrastructure of the future using our LOHC technology,” explained Daniel Teichmann, founder and chief executive at Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies.

The relationship between the two companies is not new as Vopak has been an investor in Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies since 2019. In today’s announcement, the companies committed to accelerating the establishment of the previously-announced LOHC storage plant at Chempark Dormagen in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, and of a hydrogen release plant in Rotterdam.

According to Teichmann, these facilities will create a green hydrogen supply chain that is seen as a blueprint for a future more comprehensive network across Europe and the Middle East and beyond.
