Dutch tank storage company Royal Vopak (AMS:VPK) has initiated a market consultation for storing ammonia at its Vopak Energy Park Antwerp site in Belgium in order to check market interest and learn more about customer demand.

A pre-FEED (Front End Engineering Design) study is underway and expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The project is currently anticipated to start operations in 2029, subject to market interest and a final investment decision, the company said last week.

Vopak acquired the former refinery site in 2023 and is discussing the development of a new green energy hub with the Port of Antwerp Bruges. The company says that the site’s large size and its connectivity to Northwest Europe provide opportunities for large-scale developments in the chemical industry and hydrogen economy including hydrogen carriers, ammonia storage and cracking.

At the end of September, AP Moller Holding announced plans to develop its first fossil-free plastics production plant within the Vopak Energy Park Antwerp.
