VPI, a UK and Ireland-focused power company part of the Vitol Group, has agreed to partner with Oslo-based energy storage firm Quantitas Energy for the delivery of 500 MW/1 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Germany.

The collaboration, which marks VPI’s entrance into the German market, will be executed through a joint venture, the company said in a press statement.

“Quantitas Energy has developed a project pipeline and deep relationships with key German stakeholders such as landowners, local municipalities, and distribution system operators. Together we can help develop the infrastructure needed to help facilitate Germany’s energy transition,” VPI’s chief executive Jorge Pikunic noted.

In the next three to five years, VPI is set to invest up to EUR 450 million (USD 495.7m) in BESS projects across Germany, Pikunic told Reuters separately, adding that the new joint venture plans to work on 10 projects.

The majority of the sites will be located in northeast Germany. While the storage systems will vary in size, most of them are expected to be of 60 MW.
