German renewables developer VSB Group said that its services unit started using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor its wind farm portfolio.

The technology provider is Berlin-based firm Turbit Systems GmbH, which has developed an AI monitoring solution for wind turbines.

According to VSB, the tech company has been working on AI infrastructure for turbine monitoring for the past five years. It aimed to integrate predictive maintenance and AI-supported performance monitoring with intelligent alarms into the daily work of technical operations management.

To achieve this, Turbit leverages historical SCADA data from wind turbines to learn their normal behaviour using neural networks. The system then simulates this behaviour and compares it with current sensor data. If any deviations are detected, Turbit automatically sends alarms to technical management. These alarms are then discussed, tracked, and classified in regular exchanges with Turbit, and the data is used to train deep neural networks that predict classification.

“We were looking for a provider that integrates into our work processes. In addition to software integration, it was important for us to invest in a dynamic system that improves constantly and provides the infrastructure to work with high-resolution data," said Eric Schacht, Project Manager Technical Operations Management at VSB Service GmbH.

VSB says it currently manages wind and solar farms and substations with a capacity of around 1.4 GW, while Turbit is said to be monitoring over 1,700 wind turbines in Europe using AI infrastructure.
