Austrian utility Verbund AG (VIE:VER) has agreed to supply German chemical company Wacker Chemie AG (ETR:WCH) with 10 MW of hydroelectric power for the period between 2028 and 2032.

Wacker Chemie will use the electricity to power its production site in Burghausen, southern Germany, which consumed 2.8 TWh of electricity in 2023.

As agreed, Verbund will supply 87,600 MWh annually from its existing hydroelectric power plants in Nussdorf am Inn and Passau in Germany.

The deal is in line with Wacker Chemie’s strategy to increasingly cover the electricity needs of its sites from renewable sources. The company aims to cut by half its direct emissions and emissions from energy procurement by 2030 compared to 2020.

With about 8,000 employees, the Burghausen site manufactures products ranging from polysilicon, silicones, silanes, and silica to dispersions, dispersion powders, and basic chemicals for the chemical industry. Since its establishment in 1914, it has been fed with electricity from Wacker’s own energy generation subsidiary Alzwerke GmbH.

Verbund operates a total of 130 hydroelectric power plants in Austria and the German federal state of Bavaria with a total capacity of over 8,400 MW and an annual production of over 30 TWh.
