Finnish company Wartsila Corp (HEL:WRT1V) will build a 15-MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Burkina Faso for EREN Renewable Energy (EREN) and African Energy Management Platform (AEMP).

Wartsila has won an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deal to build the solar park on the site of an off-grid gold mine and next to a 55-MW Wartsila power plant currently running on heavy fuel oil. The two power generating facilities will be controlled and operated in synchronisation.

Essakane Solar SAS, which is 90%-owned by EREN and 10% by AEMP, will operate the solar park and sell its output to IAMGOLD's Essakane mine, helping it to reduce its fuel consumption by about 6 million litres per year and its annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 18,500 tonnes.

Wartsila began offering utility-scale solar energy solutions, including full EPC services and technology, in April 2016.
