Iberdrola inaugurates 496-MW Saint-Brieuc wind farm offshore France
Sep 19, 2024 16:25 CESTA waste-to-energy plant with the capacity to produce up to 69,000 MWh of electricity per year from up to 114,000 tonnes of waste is to be constructed in Malta, the government announced on Wednesday.
The complex will be located at the village of Maghtab, the site of the country’s largest landfill. Its construction will help Malta tackle challenges in waste management and reach 2020 targets under its own waste management plan and a European Union (EU) landfill directive.
In a technical report for the project, plans for which were initially launched last summer, the Maltese government said that it supports the idea of the EU’s Joint Assistance to Support Programmes in European Regions (JASPERS) for a facility using between 79,000 tonnes and to 114,000 tonnes annually of municipal solid waste. Three scenarios with the different capacities were analysed. The final completion date suggested in the study is 2023.
A study conducted by environmental consultancy SLR Consulting Ltd was also taken into account.
According to local media reports, construction of the waste-to-energy complex will require between EUR 120 million (USD 147.8m) and EUR 150 million in investments. The project will be developed as a public-private partnership.
Malta is presently one of the EU countries with the highest levels of municipal waste generation, at 647 kg per capita in 2016, according to Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.
