Whirlpool to green US plants through wind VPPA with Engie

US household appliances maker Whirlpool Corp (NYSE:WHR) has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for wind power with Engie North America, supporting its 2030 net zero goal.

Under the contract, Whirlpool will buy electricity from 53 MW of wind turbines for more than 12 years, helping it to offset 100% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of its US plant operations, the company said on Wednesday.

Engie is expected to begin supplying the agreed power volumes in 2023. The contracted generation, the exact source of which was not specified, is equal to the power consumption of more than 27,600 homes for a year.

"This project is an important part of our ongoing sustainability initiatives, adding clean, renewable energy to the electrical grid while helping to reduce the company's carbon footprint," said Whirlpool’s Director of Sustainability Ron Voglewede.

Whirlpool aims to become net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions across its plants and operations by 2030. To support the target, the home appliances manufacturer is investing in onsite renewable energy projects across its production sites and is separately contracting renewable capacity through VPPAs.
