Wind power reduces Spain's fossil fuel imports by EUR 886m in Q1 2013

May 20, 2013 - Wind power generation reduced Spain's fossil fuel imports by EUR 886 million (USD 1.14bn) in the first quarter of 2013, data by the country's energy watchdog CNE showed.

A total 1,290 wind farms were operating in 15 Spanish autonomous regions at the end of March, and they received subsidies worth EUR 830 million in the first three months of 2013, CNE said.

The wind farms generated enough energy to cover the entire demand of all Spanish households in the last six months, CNE added.

In 2011, there were 70 facilities producing parts for wind farms and the value of their exports came in at EUR 2 billion that year, according to the latest updated data by the Commerce Agency of the United Nations (UN).

Spain registered a trade surplus in the first quarter of 2013 for the first time since 1971, when the central bank Banco de Espana started to keep record.
