Wind farms in Ireland generated 1,076 GWh of power in April, providing 32% of the country’s electricity last month, Wind Energy Ireland’s monthly report showed on Monday.

This marked the second best April for wind generation in Ireland after the 1,112 GWh produced in April last year.

According to the data, the average wholesale price of electricity in April 2024 was EUR 88.52 (USD 94.7), a 30% decline compared to April 2023.

The figures also showed that wind energy supplied 38% of Ireland’s electricity in the first four months of 2024.

“These results emphasise the contribution that wind energy is making to insulate Irish families and businesses from expensive fossil fuels,” said Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland.

However, 9.6% of wind energy was lost so far in 2024 because it could not be accommodated by the grid.

“We also need an electricity grid strong enough to decarbonise our energy system. We are calling for cross-party political support at every level for EirGrid and ESB Networks to develop a much stronger grid for Ireland and to deliver critical projects like the North-South Interconnector,” Cunniffe said.

In a step forward for the development of offshore wind energy in the country, the government last week published the draft South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP).
